So, it's been a bit wet around here lately. Two days ago, we received the most impressive thunderstorm I've seen since we moved into the Moanstead, which culminated with several inches of rain and 2-3 hours of power outage. And then yesterday it just decided to keep raining. Needless to say, it's a nasty, muddy mess out there. The National Weather Service in Raleigh provided this map of the 72 hour rainfall totals for our area. Since my Lacrosse weather station rain gauge hasn't worked in months, I'm forced to rely on the NWS for this data.
As you can see, areas just slightly to our west got upwards of 11" of rain in the last 72 hours. We got much less than that, but still as much as 5 or so inches of rain fell at the Moanstead. What this map doesn't give you is what the scene looked like on the ground.
We knew the storm was coming because there was a severe thunderstorm warning in Wake County, just to our west. The sky got dark. And then the bottom fell out.
Here we see the scene off the front and back porches, respectively. (Note: All of these picture are far more impressive if you click to enlarge them.)
As with most any storm we get, the driveway effectively funnels the water right down the sidewalk. It was a downright river. That's our bottom front steps under there!
Speaking of rivers flowin', the culvert that often provides the water for the intermittent Moan Creek was hard at work.
Then it started hailing...
While Jessie and I hunkered down in the house and Mama hid under the couch, some were unphased by the storm. At least the chickens spent some of the time under the tarp and somewhat out of the weather.
And then I got a sign. An age old question was answered for me in less than a second. God hates peanuts. My peanut harvest had been peacefully drying on an old window screen at the top of the deck stairs when the storm picked up the screen and threw my peanuts all over the deck. I believe I even heard the wind whisper, "Take that!"Not to be confused with the wind whispering, Mary.
Perhaps He felt bad about the peanuts though, as the drive out of the neighborhood post-storm was a glorious one...
One step closer to ridding the neighborhood of the much-despised Bradford Pear!

Pretty impressive rain storm you got there. Our rain hasn't been nearly as intense, but we did set a new local record with 28 consecutive days of rain that came to a merciful halt about a week ago. Of course, it's raining again as I type.
Cool storm. We don't really get any cool thunderstorms here, and when we do they're in the fall. Weird.
